Kingdom of the Little People

Kingdom of the Little People

Português Português Português Português Português Welcome to Kunming, “Spring City” of China. [Sound of seagulls] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos reacts with surprise and laughs] [Sound of seagulls] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Kunming is the capital city of the Yunnan province, in southwest China. The weather here always brings to mind early spring. But, I didn’t come from the depths of winter in New York for the weather. I came to check out a very peculiar and controversial tourist attraction, (located) about an hour outside the city, that people have been talking about for years. A place called “Kingdom of the Little People”. [Music] [Chime sound] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: From what I saw on TV, I expected it to be “The Wizard of Oz” on acid. On arrival, I realized (that what) was touted as a magnificient, and whimsical theme park, was really a run-down, abandoned place that made me instantly feel uncomfortable. [Chime sound] [Sound of vehicle driving past] This is “The Kingdom of the Little People”. [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: “Kingdom of the Little People” was founded in 2009 by wealthy real-estate mogul, Chen Mingjing; and, as you can imagine, has since been the centre of a lot of controversy. Media outlets like the Daily Mail, The New York Times; and organizations like Little People of America and Handicap International have criticized the park with claims that it’s the equivalent of a human zoo, and that (the park) only serves to increase negative stereotypes. Even Warwick Davis, the famous English actor of short stature who played Willow, has openly expressed his distaste for the establishment. But, I wanted to see what the park was really about myself. [Music] [Clapping] [Rap music] [🎵Haters be illin’ when they see me killin’ on the floor.🎵 🎵Looks like I’m missing competition from the roof to y’all.🎵 🎵I know you’re looking at me, I know you’re wantin’ more,🎵 🎵You like those apples? Well, I’m bad, baby; to the core!🎵 [Rap music] [Woman reacts with surprise] [Audience cheering] [Audience clapping] [Rap music] [Sound of crowd] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: My name’s Annette. I like your outfit. Is that the character that you play in the show? So, in between shows, do you get to hang out and- you know, read books, or..? What do you like to do? [Crowd playing tug-of-war] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: At first glance, the little people we met seemed exceptionally cheerful, but I wondered whether it was their directives to appear pleasant at all times; which would be in line with most theme parks, but most theme parks are not almost exclusively stuffed with little people. However, I’m not going to lie; while speaking with them, I became confused about whether I should approach them like children or adults. Perhaps, that was because the park’s higher-ups tended to treat their shorter staff members like kids, even though their ages range from 19 to 49. [Crowd playing tug-of-war] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: How old were you when your parents told you that you weren’t going to continue growing? [Sound of balloon being inflated] [Balloon pops] [People laugh] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Employees here mainly suffer from two forms of dwarfism: disproportionate dwarfism, the umbrella term for genetic disorders that cause unusual proportions of their body parts; and proportionate dwarfism, which results from hormonal deficiency. What they all have in common, is that they’re no taller than 4 feet, 3 inches; which is the main requirement for working as a performer at the Kingdom. [Sound of crowd] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: One thing about the Kingdom, is that performers who work in such close proximity sometimes fall in love; like Aifang and Chenjiao, a couple I met who have been dating for over a year, and who both suffer from proportional dwarfism. [Chengjiao Shu]: Hi, hello! [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Hi! [Chengjiao Shu]: Hello. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: (I’m) Annette. Chengjiao Shu]: Ni hao. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Nice to meet you! [Woman]: Ni hao. [Chengjiao Shu]: Nice to meet you. Hi, ni hao. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Okay. So, what was it that made you want to switch careers and come to this place? [Sound of audience] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: The little people who work at the park come from all different backgrounds. They make a monthly salary ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 RMB which is roughly the equivalent to what a university graduate would make in the area. They hold positions throughout the company, ranging from accountants to sales representatives, creating a nearly self-sufficient community of their own. [Chime music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: So, Aifang and Chengjiao are going to take us upstairs, to get a look at what it’s like backstage. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Whoa. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: These stairs are a little.. to small for me. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: [Laughing] I’m afraid I’m going to fall backwards. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Ah, great. [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What are they doing inside here? [Music] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: [Holding back laughter] This is amazing. [Music] [Sound of the park] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: After the show is finished, we all got onto the exclusive bus service offered by the park, and headed toward the dorms to eat lunch, and (to) see where the performers live. [Whistling music] [Sound of chickens] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: So, what’s in here? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What is that? Are they pets, or.. do you eat them, or..? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Can you pet them? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos giggles] [Music] [Music and sound of people] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: This is the two-floor building, where men and women live on separate levels. It has 20 rooms, and can accomodate over a hundred people; though, saying it’s a tight squeeze would be an understatement. [Music] [Keys jingling] [Music and sound of keys jingling] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Which is your bed? [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs shyly] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What are some of your favourite things to do when you’re hanging out in your room? [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: [Laughing] Aww! [Flute rendition of The Blue Danube plays] [Yuzhou Liu (Jingjing) laughs] [Flute rendition of The Blue Danube plays] [Flute rendition of The Blue Danube plays] [Sound of typing on on computer keyboard and the door creaking shut] [Door shuts] [Sound of typing on a computer keyboard] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Hey! [Sound of typing on a computer keyboard] [Chengjiao Shu]: Oh, hello! [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What’s goin’ on? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: So, how many people live in this room with you? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Do you think, maybe, you can show us some of your friends’ rooms, too? [Chengjiao Shu]: Yes, yes! [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Good/Okay. [Music] [Man]: Hello! [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Nice to meet you! [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Mhm. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: I see (that) you have a lot of, uh, LeBron James on your wall. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: So, you watch a lot of basketball, I take it? [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Well, I really like your room. I mean, do you guys ever sleep in the same room, or you- do you have to sleep upstairs and he has to sleep downstairs? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Mhm. And, what is it that you guys like about each other most? [Aifang giggles shyly] [Chengjiao laughs shyly] [Translator]: He likes that she is very cute. [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Well, it says “I love you” and “My heart belongs to you” above your bed. Where did that come from? [Translator]: Aww, his heart belongs to her! [Chengjiao Shu laughs] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs] [Romantic music plays] [🎵Love is love🎵] [Guitar] [🎵Let’s talk about love🎵] [Guitar] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: And, do you think eventually, one day, you.. would want to have children? [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: What do you think the future holds, for the both of you? [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Well, what- what do you think of organizations that don’t support the park because they believe that, by the performances, it might be drawing negative attention to the community? [Music] [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: After spending a day here at “Kingdom of the Little People”, getting to know everyone, watching their performances, and learning about their everyday lives; I’ve come to the conclusion that the controversies surrounding the park don’t really matter at all. Because here, they found a place where they can really be themselves; and, in the end, that might actually make it a magical kingdom. [Music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs] [Music] [Basketball dribbling and music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos]: Look out! [Basketball dribbling and music] [Man laughs] [Basketball dribbling and music] [Music] [Sound of camera shutter] [Basketball dribbling and music] [Annette Lamothe-Ramos laughs]

  1. Wow how i wish i can go and visit that wonderfull place, little people but big heart 😊😊😊😊😍😍😍😘😘

  2. They are beautiful ❣️

  3. The woman interviewing such a lady. She kept a good attitude despite her personal thought and feeling 💯

  4. It so much more for the couple. I wish them well

  5. I llve little people 😍😍

  6. The guy at the end… he had handles, a little bit. He said that he'd skip work to watch NBA games. Love it. They all seem like they're comfortable and live in a world in which they're accepted. I'm not a fan of how they do night checks… they're adults, let them be adults. But I do understand that being a work environment… As long as they're happy, I don't see why people would be upset. I'm basing my opinion on this documentary. I don't know everything about the Kingdom. But based on this, I'd say they're all living life the way they want to live it.

  7. The only issue about this is maybe the person who owns this park should provide regular clothes and not wear kid's clothes

  8. I like it people with the same conditions can relate to each other there making a living and educating the rest of us. If there happy then I am happy. And I don’t care what the failing lying New York Times thinks.

  9. 14:46 awww the best part of the video 😘 who's getting romantic vibes? 😅❤️

  10. Seems like a wonderful place. With the exception of the housing situation, they seem to get paid really well and enjoy the life force from one another. In a way, I am a little jealous of having so many people like yourself. I think they should try to improve the living quarters, but I am sure that it's probably infinitely better than where they came from so it gets an A in my book. I wish them all hope, joy, and futures that they couldn't even dream could happen. God bless you all!

  11. Take note that this is capitalism in it's purest form. One rich man taking it upon himself to provide an entire life, career, and self-generating business that supplies income for these little people and himself. The other way is the government labeling them as disabled and dysfunctional and then throwing them into a government subsidized welfare program only to give them zero self worth or independent identity. In this kingdom, they get to function like the rest of the world, earn a living, have self-worth, have human company and entertainment all without being persecuted. Perfect demonstration of why capitalism reigns supreme. I bet you never thought that such a thing was on full display here.🤣🤣

  12. They are beautiful people of God.

  13. "was really an abandoned place that made me instantly feel uncomfortable"

One of the best descriptions of China I've ever read!

  14. Why can't they have kids… Is it a biological thing or the government?

  15. 17:14 is that her actual voice??

  16. My question is and always will be, how does this benefit the small people? How does this benefit the visitor? I see these people as fascinating and they make me smile. Their life can be as different in society or as a star. Ask them how THEY feel and then develop your opinions.
Personally I find this beautiful. I would love to visit these remarkable people.

  17. Best Wishes for You All Love from Pakistan From heart

  18. This place is amazing, all of the people seem to be truly happy. I can imagine how hard it must be for them, I’m only just 5’ and I was tested for dwarfism when I was younger At the age of 12, 5yr olds were taller then me and I was and still am bullied because of my height.
I think its awesome these people have each other and can enjoy each day with out being laughed at n ridiculed because of their height.

  19. We people don't let them be happy, if they r around us v make fun of them, and if they r in separate place v call it zoo.
    How disgusting r v ??
We are worse than animal, all the time why v want to hurt other sentiment, coz it graves u pleasure shame on me and many other who make fun of these people,
When will v be educated or civilized in real sense

  20. if anyone is considered a "zoo" it should be us tall people. ….Very Cool place..kudos

  21. Great Story! Bravo!

  22. I came here to see the slam dunking contest…

  23. First I am seeing this video…hat's off to them..

  24. A taboo lifestyle doesn't mean they aren't happy. It just means its odd to us. They sound like how most people want to be- happy and accepted for who they are.

  25. all people are different not even twins are alike. Just as you judge someone, someone else is judging you so we just need to coexist and chill

  26. No difference between roloff, 7 johnstons and this town with dwarfs, all are intertaiment

  27. Stupid to say human zoo! If they can support themselves and live a happy life why not? We live in a world that even if your skin color is different we experience prejudice. So what makes you think they can happily live in such a society? Let them live a loving and productive lives!

  28. I would like their living situation (apartments) upgraded.

  29. Bla bla bla niga bla bla something niga I didn’t get it

  30. I'm 5'0 so I'm short but not that short. I had a smile on my face the whole video but not for the reason you think. As a short person I value everything they say they have found and are truly happy

  31. Outside of the first tier cities China is still struggling. These people have jobs, skills, money, friends, an environment that is scaled for them (my wife is Chinese, and she is 155 centimeters, 5'1" tall. there are things around our house not scaled for her!). I'm proud of them not giving up on life, & I think it's mainly self-righteous and arrogant Westerners that are bothered by this.

  32. Why couldn't they just say kingdom of MIDGETS??

  33. 3:30 she says nighahr 4 times

  34. 14:14 why not just ask the real question U nIGkaz FuKN oR WOt??????

  39. Do you reckon they ride dogs instead of horses

  40. This is how every human wants to live regardless of anything

  41. I like the kingdom of little people

  42. How can this be anything but beautiful? They are around each other, finding it peaceful instead out in the world where sadly, people make fun of them. I wish the US offered this. I would like to see short people here to have a chance to live in "a world" that adapted to their needs.

  43. Am happy that they are happy and making a living which, most normal people don't have or experience.

  44. Bridget the midget is my hero

  45. It would be great if they built apartments for couples.

  46. I thought it was about gnomes, drwaves and leprechauns cause of the word "kingdom"…sorry…my bad…

  47. It’s a community like any one else: seniors community, vegans community……I like that ! It’s a way to live happy , safe and without fear from surrounding people!!!!

  48. Communism at its finest

  49. You have to call them midgets, little people is derogatory.

  50. I just dont like the fact that they have to share rooms….what about there privacy.

  51. THEY ARE HAPPY , LOVE AND HELP EACHOTHER. WHAT ELSE REALLY MATTERS. GOD BLESS THEM ALL

  54. That lady is so sweet, the bed is neat heyy

  55. She is cute fr real winxxx😍😍

  56. Sad about the children part bt still happiness is what we all desire

  57. They sound and look like children, most of them. I think it’s great they can feel safe and have actual jobs so they can afford to live and fall in love, but I wonder about them having children and all the medical problems that can come along with their genetic issues.

  58. I wonder if they see their birth family’s ever, and if so how often.

  59. What a great place for such sweet and special people. They truly are special people, like innocent angels. Aww…so sweet and adorable.

  60. Most Theme Parks, DONT HIRE LITTLE PEOPLE. I think its great. All the little people in the Wizard of Oz had a great time filming, dating, and socializing, and most lived in the same neighborhood (near my house) until they all slowly passed away.

  61. 15:15 I hate the way that girl was laughing in the background

  62. I like their life style, thank you for their community

  63. This is disturbing in so many ways. Treating adults as kids because they have no height is repugnant. They are robbing them of their humanity. How about allowing them to live their lives anyway they see fit? I am upset.

  64. Yea babe you get Goose bump
    Because it’s a Pedophile

  68. God bless them with happiness.may there dream get fulfilled

  69. I love these little people. I like short statured people. I am short too. Only 5 feet 5 inches or 165 centimeter. My growth was going well but at the high school my growth stunted. I felt very sorrow for that though my Parents are shorter than me. There are a number of short statured men like me in our country. But many youngers are very tall. Many girls are so much tall. I feel shy. I want that there would be short statured men's society in my country Bangladesh.

  70. Whats the music name after 12.03??

  71. I really enjoyed watching this documentary and learning about unique people in different countries. Thank you for the learning experience 😊

  72. Kendrick historian poet
It appears to be a very unique idea and a well intended design but it is fixated by a seemly world of childlike persona . You have people that are adults engaging in games and child like behaviors that are not age appropriate. These are adults. What happen when the experiment fails or the economics doesn't pan out. Will they be prepared to re-enter the real world, where there maturity as adults is require for there adjustment as well as their survival.

  73. Let this "PEOPLE",LIVE there LIFE like they want it to BE…Now and Days YOU have to much ignores in this society that makes DOES that wants the world to run right like ME,look at those ignorent individual like they are the one with the problems..It is sad to say this..

  74. Warrick is a rich westerner. He probably doesn't understand how much prejudice there is in China, and how low the standard of living is there.

  75. Kingdom Hearts ❤💞

  76. Loved his "NEKI" jacket!!

  77. What would their options be in another part of China? Professional beggar? Don't judge these little people for their choices they make to support themselves. Little people = big hearts.

  78. they may be little, but they have the biggest heart.. i love the girl in pink sweater.

  79. 15:10 people like us aren't able to have children. , like seriously, but why??

  80. People can say they're being exploited, say it's wrong, etc. but, ultimately – the only people's opinion that matters is the little people that are there. Too many times Social Justice Warriors take up causes and end up ruining things for groups that were perfectly happy with what others perceived as wrong. Not even all little people are going to agree, so, to each his own and the rest of you shut the fuck up! It's absolutely normal to want to be with others like yourself – why do you think we have support groups? Clubs? What you see as exploitation, they may see as a wonderful place where they aren't picked on by their neighbors, etc. and EVERYONE understands their problems!

  81. Gotta love our society – these people get so tired of being judged and gawked at, they form their own community (like any group of people do) and we judge them for being in it and attempt to ruin it for them! They're happy – debate over, leave 'em alone.

  82. Thanks to show us this kingdom of lovely people.

  83. My first-time realisation that basketball is not only meant for tall people. He nailed the whole damm thought in my head🤙🏻
