How to Strip African Cichlids and Move Into Egg Tumbler

How to Strip African Cichlids and Move Into Egg Tumbler

Hey everyone, Steve Poland here, And as my subscribers know, I breed African
Cichlids. These fish are mouthbrooders, which means
that the females carry their eggs in their mouths until they hatch. After several weeks the mother will spit out
the fry once they have grown large enough to swim freely. And if you want to keep those fry you have
a couple of options. One is to move the mother to her own tank
as soon as you notice she’s holding eggs and let her spit there. But if you don’t have a tank available, a
second option is to strip the fry out of her mouth and use something called a tumbler to move the
eggs around until they’re ready. So I wanted to show you the process I go through. This is a Blue Neon peacock and she’s been
holding for a couple of weeks. So this is the prime time to strip her if
I plan to tumble the eggs. If I waited another week or so she would be
spitting out free swimmers. So I just reach in and grab her as gently
as I can. And you may be able to see that she already
spit a couple of fry when I was moving her into the breeder box a few minutes ago.
And once I’ve got her I’m going to up her mouth. And there are a bunch of different ways to
do this. You can use your finger but I will usually
use a twisty tie and bend the end a little. It’s not sharp or anything and it won’t hurt
her. And then I just ever so gently open up her
mouth and the fry will start to come out. And usually I’ll just do this one more time
to make sure that they’re all out. Giving her a gentle rock up and down. And then I’ll either put her back in the tank
or if possible I’ll keep her separated for a bit. The females typically don’t eat while they’re
holding and I like for them to get their strength back before they have to deal with tankmates. This is the egg tumbler. There are lots of different kinds but this
is a pretty basic one. And the easiest way I’ve found to move the
fry into the tumbler is with a short piece of airline tubing. Just suck on the end a tiny bit and it will
move the fry up into the tubing. Then just put your finger over it and move
them into the tumbler. This is just like you would have done with
a straw in your soft drink as a kid. Then once all the fry are in the tumbler you
can move it into a tank and hook it up to an air pump. You don’t need a lot of air. The fry should just rock gently the way they
would in their mother’s mouth. Then once the fry start to swim around in
the tumbler you can move them to a breeder box or to their own tank. If you have any questions about this then
let me know down in the comments. And if this is your first time here at my

  6. Great video, I do the same but with a tooth pick.

  7. Nice job…I like the basic tumblers best ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Once the eggs have hatched into wigglers like in your video, a tumbler is no longer a requirement. They can go straight into a tank or breeding net.

  9. Great Video, gentle hands. I also allow my Cichlids to breed. I do it all for pleasure as my hobby.

  10. How easy is it to keep Cichlids?

  11. Good vid Steve. I use the same twisty tie and tumblers. But instead of the air line tubing I use a turkey baster. I get almost every fry in one shot into the tumbler.

  12. Very cool thanks for the tips ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

  13. Okay, thanks Steve.

  14. Great video! the hardest part for me is catching the girl! LOL! I've had 2 female holding in my 75 gallon and I just couldnt catch her… I recently found 2 babies in my tank… ๐Ÿ™‚ its kinda cool letting mother nature do its thing sometimes…

  16. I like using the tumbler option I don't like seeing my fish not eat for too long …. I haven't bred African cichlids yet only Mbuna and I let them hold for a week and then I strip them and tumble the eggs I just got another batch of 20 in my tumbler ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค— great video steve

  25. Woulld this method work on angelfish eggs also ?

  26. what do u feed them with?

  27. gud video ur txt is two big covers half of ur vid

  28. listen mate… 1, wait 18 days before u take the fry, you took those way to early…

and there are an easier way to do it… 1, just keep a birthtub into your frytub until they are big enough to not go into a pump or something… when you take them out, gently lift her, block her gills with thumb and your pointing finger, and then use a syringe without the needle, and fill it with water… use the end of the syringe to open the mouth and flush with water… then all the fry comes out…..

  29. I'm not sure what I was searching for but this was the top result.

  40. Why can't you let the mother do the job on raising the fry? Why do you have to separate them?

  41. Hello please help I did a clean out on my Malawi cichlid tank yesterday and I found 5 free swimming babies each about 1cm long! I put them in a breeder box that I had but my adults won't leave them alone and keep knocking and biting at the breeder box. What should I do? At the moment I have the breeder box floating in a guppy tank they don't seem to really care but I don't want to keep them there in case of aggression issues. Thanks

  42. great video, very informative. I just started setting up my first breeding system. I was thinking about separating the female once she was holding and letting her release the fry when they are ready. but I may have to try stripping the female after watching this.

  43. Hey man, would you recommend letting cichlid spit on its own (currently in an isolation tank in the aquarium) or should I strip it like you've shown here? I don't want to strip it too early. I do have a 10g quarantine tank, would you advise that I move her there and let her spit on her own?

  44. Wow ๐Ÿ˜ฒur so informative !

  47. I bred Ahli cichlids for a few years. It was pretty much a set 21 days, and I could strip the female. I would gently push on the underside of her mouth and she spit them out. Egg yoke and plenty of oxygenated water and the babies grew fast.

  48. while female r holding eggs in their mouth will they eat the feed that that we provide

  49. can they not spit them out themselves?

  62. She Gives Birth From Her Mouth !!!

  63. One question, why do you have to move the fry into a tumbler, can't you just leave them in the tank?

  81. So you have to do this to every cichlid ? Like you have to squeeze it ?

  82. How do you know that a female is carrying eggs??? Can you see them in her mouth?

  83. I got cichlids weโ€™ll I had 2 one is female the other was male but he was like 7 years old and he went belly up about 2 month ago. I thought my female was holding babyโ€™s but she just wonโ€™t let them go how long will they hold them? because she definitely got the big jaw and she has been like that for over 2 months.

  84. Hi Steve my Africian Cichlid has appeared to be holding eggs, this is the first day I've noticed this, I'm 95 percent sure this is the first day with them, at the moment I have her in a 10 gallon tank because I'm waiting for my new tank to come in. She's the only fish in the tank, and I was wondering if I could leave her in the tank because of that. Would it be okay to, or should I remove the eggs in about 5 to 6 days? At the moment I don't have a tumbler because I wasn't expecting such a gift. If you could let me know that would be great!

  85. That's amazing my female convict keeps going in the corner and fanning as they call it but not seen and eggs as yet but I have a male on with her there's something going on

  86. is the egg tumbler a better option than letting her release naturally in her own tank.

  87. I wonder how can that Mother live for so long without eating anything? My Taiwan Reef bred yesterday and I'm lil confused. I have separate 20 gal tank but for how many days I should allow the mother to keep her eggs?

  88. If I Seperate the mother and let her spit
What are the chances of her eating the fry..
Obviously I can't watch tank 24/7 so may not be there to move her after she spits

  89. This is an old video im aware, but worth trying. I have a Pregnant OB Peacock and she's got fry that no longer have yolk sac present but she is still holding them in her mouth. Will she eventually let them go on her own or is it possible for her to hold them too long and they starve?

  90. Yo all of you u donโ€™t need a stupid tumbler I just did this and just had the babyโ€™s and put them in the tank lol

  91.
