Degu animal facts for kids! Clever cat free preschool learn clever facts about the degu.

hey you welcome back to clever cat class
are you ready to learn something all-new and be a very clever cat me too
one thing that makes me super curious are some of the unique pets that humans
choose to share their home with and so today I want to tell you about a cousin
of the chinchilla the degu now the take is actually a rodent native the Chilean
lowland but they look a lot like an oversized gerbil they’re thin-skinned
creatures with lush brown fur rounded ears and a teeny little cute nose but
unlike a gerbil who usually weighs about two ounces the daegu they average eight
ounces now Degas are really social creatures which might make them a good
pet but they are used to living in huge communities of other days with as many
as a hundred different individuals and sort of like meerkats they cooperate to
dig huge underground living quarters that have dozens of tunnels leading to a
whole bunch of different compartments daegu’s underground burrows will include
nurseries bedrooms food storage rooms and all the members of the colony will
work together digging and removing soil to create new chambers and tunnels
throughout their lives female daegu’s are amazing mothers and
aunts he’ll work together to raise the young and though even there’s each
other’s babies and unlike a lot of small rodent creatures daegu’s are diurnal or
about during the daytime hours now they spend a lot of their daytime foraging
but if you had one for a pet you could provide it with food so if it’s fed in
the daytime hours playing with you now unlike most rodents the degas don’t eat
a lot of fruits and vegetables because they’re from the desert and their
natural environment is harsh with very few items like this available so they
mostly dry leaves grasses and if they can find them the occasional cedar – and
in fact this make stick is really important for scientific research and
human health conditions like diabetes see simple sugars from fruit are not
available to the day queue naturally so they have absolutely no tolerance for it
meaning that scientists can learn a lot about diabetes in the body’s reaction to
sugar by studying bay goos sadly for the Degas but luckily for scientists Degas
also develop Alzheimer’s disease or something very similar to it as they age
sometimes as early as three something else that researchers noticed as they
studied de hickeys for these diseases was how intelligent
they are see they have problem-solving skills and even show empathy for other
daegu’s beyond that take ease and labs have actually shown the ability to use
simple tools and even understand object sizes they try to put one thing in
another or stack items in size order some researchers actually believe that
daegu’s are at least as intelligent as raccoons and they’re able to escape and
problem-solve with a great mental capability and wow that intelligence is
incredibly cool and somewhat amazing what that means is that someone who has
a daegu for a pet has to provide it with constant mental stimulation or well
they’ll get destructive of course and so Riley social you’re actually supposed to
have at least two daegu’s or they’ll get lonely and some people suggest having
four to eight daegu’s in your house at any one time just the idea of having
four to eight rodents in my house at any one time is a little overwhelming but I
do have to admit that having that many would give me the chance to observe the
amazing relationships developed between daegu’s and watch some of the
communication between them of course having that many tegus might also
disrupt nap time because dag is in general need a lot of stimulation like
exercise wheels and toys in their cage because they’re considered more active
than any other small rodent available for pets and best yet daegu’s are not
only adorable and affection of pets they live about 10 years on average so cuddle
what entertain one and teach it to use all the tools and toys that you can find
and they might just make the perfect pet after your cat thank you so much for
learning with me today we’re really getting quite clever aren’t we now it’s
time for you to check your schedule and I will see you in your next class
