Boston Terrier vs French Bulldog – Which is Better? Dog vs. Dog

Boston Terrier vs French Bulldog – Which is Better? Dog vs. Dog

You’re Watching Animal Facts! It can sometimes be hard to distinguish between
the adorable Boston Terrier and French Bulldog. They do look quite similar. But, cuteness and those adorable upright ears
aside, there are a lot of similarities and differences between the two breeds. Let’s learn more about these lovable dogs
and choose a favorite. If that’s even possible. Let’s get started, but before we start,
make sure to hit that subscribe button and click the bell icon to become part of our
notification squad. History When we examine the histories of these two
breeds, it’s easy to see why they are often confused. The French Bulldog and Boston Terrier share
a common ancestor – the English Bulldog. The Frenchie, as they are affectionately known
by fans, actually started life in jolly old England. During the Industrial Revolution, English
lacemakers took their small Bulldogs with them to work in Normandy, as their furry companions
were originally very popular ratters. In France, the dogs were then bred with French
Terriers to become the French Bulldog we know and love today. The breed became popular with Parisian women
who championed their bat-like ears. The Boston Terrier gets its name from, you
guessed it, Boston, Massachusetts in the good ol’ US of A. In the 1870s, this American-made breed was
originally a cross between the English Bulldog and now extinct English White Terrier called
the Hooper’s Judge. Over the years, crossbreeding with the English
Bull Terrier, the Boxer, the Pit Bull Terrier and the French Bulldog resulted in what is
now the modern Boston Terrier. An interesting fact – the Boston Terrier
was the first non-sporting breed created in the US. Appearance The most obvious place to start when trying
to determine who is who among these two dogs is appearance. While they do have similarities such as short
snouts, docked or minimal tails, short coats, upright ears, bug eyes and adorable smiles,
there are some differences that make it easy to tell them apart. The French Bulldog has shorter legs and a
more muscular build than its Boston counterpart as well as a heavier bone structure. It also has a large, square-shaped head, with
rounded tips on its bat-like ears. The Boston Terrier, on the other hand, has
longer, leaner legs, a rounded head with pointed tips on its ears. Their flatter faces mean that both dogs are
brachycephalic breeds. Their tiny nostrils, long palates, and narrow
tracheas can cause health and breathing problems. Size Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs are both
similarly-sized small dogs. The Frenchie is the heavyweight of the two,
usually weighing between 20-28 pounds and standing between 14 to 16 inches tall, while
the Boston Terrier, usually weighs between 15-25 pounds at 11 to 13 inches tall. Coat and Colors Both breeds have short coats, making grooming
low maintenance. Since their hair is so short, there is little
to no odor and mild shedding. Boston Terriers are known as the “American
Gentleman” for their tuxedo-like markings in brindle, seal or black with white. The French Bulldogs have a much wider variety
of colors that include: Brindle, Brindle & White, Cream, Fawn, Fawn & White, Fawn Brindle, White,
White & Brindle, White & Fawn And more! Due to their short coats, both breeds can
be sensitive to extreme cold. Before we continue, have you checked out our

and Bosties are far from small in personality. Both breeds are very friendly, loving breeds
and make excellent family companions. The Boston Terrier can be lively, alert and
intelligent and can go from having bursts of energy to wanting to curl up and have a
cuddle. The Frenchie, also nicknamed the “Clown
in a Clock of a Philosopher” for its entertaining personality, has an equally friendly disposition. Frenchies are renowned for making their owners
laugh, are very affectionate and love to cuddle. Boston Terriers learn quickly and are a great
dog for first-time dog owners looking for an obedient dog who will listen most of the
time. French Bulldogs, like most “Bully breeds”,
can be a bit on the stubborn side and may require constant training to nail down the
behaviors you’re looking for. Activity Levels Boston Terriers are active dogs. They love to jump, run, play and chase and
are occasionally known to swim. They can be great running companions as long
as you’re aware of the signs they may be overheating due to their short snout. Some Boston Terriers can become obsessed with
doggie toys and may want to play nonstop. French Bulldogs are more on the relaxed side
due to their heavier build, which makes them less agile when it comes to running and jumping. But, they can be energetic, as well! A long walk or mild hike is a great source
of exercise for a French Bulldog, who is prone to obesity if not exercised regularly. Both breeds adapt very well to apartment living. They’re both great at being able to control
their energy indoors and are very adaptable to new living situations. Both dogs are super loving breeds and make
great family pets. Health and Lifespan The average lifespan of a French Bulldog is
over 10 to 12 years while Boston Terriers live 13-15 years. Their short muzzles make them both prone to
respiratory problems and are at risk of heat stroke in hot weather. As stated earlier, French Bulldogs can suffer
from obesity if overfed and under-exercised. They can also have problems with their eyes,
heart, and back. Boston Terriers are prone to cataracts and
seizures and may suffer from allergies and deafness. And, while this is not a health concern, well,
at least not for the dog, the Frenchie is notorious for its not so pleasant smelling
gas. This little dog can literally clear a room
and look at you like you did it. So, which breed wins this bat-eared battle,
the OG French Bulldog or the American Gentleman, the Boston Terrier? That’s up to you. You tell us in the comments. If there are other breeds you’d like us

  1. Which do you think is better? The French Bulldog or the Boston Terrier? We can't decide.

  2. I love my Frenchie FENDI🐶

  3. I’ve had a total of 6 Boston’s. One had respiratory issues, one got encephalitis I have 3 now one is 15, 13 and 2 1/2

  4. I love them both personally we have adopted two Boston's over the years, my biggest 'pet peve' is they love to chase cars! We have to keep an electronic collar on our current Boston Bo-Bo! We have a dear friend with a Frenchie, the dogs love each other! However, the initial cost of over 4K and her constant vet bills….well put it this way, I'll take my adopted/rescued Boston any day! We favor the breeds with the smushed face! Like they ran a 100 yard dash on a 90 yard track! Both breeds are loving, fun and great with animals, kids and people but the health factor tips the scales to the Boston.

  5. I am team Frenchie.

  9. My brother has a Boston, and I must admit that should I have a dog, I would probably go Boston to. Unfortunately I live alone and work long hours, so the dog would have to be alone for 12-15 hours, and that wouldn't be fair on the dog.

  10. Why choose! Get a Frenchton 🙂

  26. I don't think it's a matter of which breed is BETTER. More like which one each individual PREFERS; which one is more SUITED to you.
I myself prefer Bostons because of the one my brother had, who I fell in love with.

  35. I have a Boston and she is OBSESSED with this one toy we call “rubba.” She will get all cute and give us kisses then she will go get rubba and expect us to throw it since she gave us love 😂. The name rubba comes from the weird bark she does that sounds like “rubba” 😂

  36. I have the best of both worlds, a Frenchton 😊

  38. I love them both but I might be a little obsessed with Boston Terriers lol. I have 4 Boston Terriers 🥰

  41. Will you consider doing a video on bojacks? They are a mix between jack Russell and Boston terrier. I have one his name is Clark and he is very smart and loving and playful but because he is a mixed breed I cannot find many informative videos on them. Thank you for your videos! Very informative and you good at keeping it short and sweet 👍

  48. I've had and been around different breeds all of my life. The Frenchie is unique in that he makes me laugh every day. It's real and hard to explain – they are just very comical dogs.

  49. I have a Boston terrier and she's AWESOME 😃

  50. boston terriers hate minorities and i have EVIDENCE

  51. I love my year old Boston Terrier, GG is the most loving, aggressive but caring dog. Almost always knows when sum1 isn't in a good mood, and can change that ASAP!

  52. Me and my family had a Boston terrier and a Frenchie the Boston was named Sammie and she passed in May and that’s my picture

  53. I’ve got a mix French and Boston and it’s a great combination

  54. Boston terriers for the win

  55. Love my frencz ❤️

  56. I’ve had both, Boston’s way smarter and easier to teach.

  57. The Boston is the only one of the two that I have any knowledge of they are great. Frenchies are good as well it seems.

  58. I have both breeds. Boston Terriers also have terrible windy problems, without a doubt. Of the two though, the Boston is the easier option to train and they love to play and cuddle. I think they are probably better for a first time dog owner. However, Frenchies are better with kids in my experience, a bit more patient and gentle. Providing proper training, plenty of exercise and play will make them a loving companion whichever breed you go for.

  59. they are both adorable 💕

  60. I love boston terŕier

  61. frenchies are also loving and they are really funny.but Bostons are just like Frenchies🤔🤔🤔

  62. I have a frechie am baby sitting for a mate now and omg so stubborn worse dog to train I would say Boston are better too train but frenchie are cuter so I would say Boston terrier to be honest this frenchie was hard to potty train like 9 months before house broke and they don’t move and just don’t listen they will only listen wen they want to so for me is Boston terrier

  63. I'm not picking a side. Both are beautiful. I have a "dog", Kaiya 7 years and I was just given a Boston,Nix 6, who we've had for a couple months now. Kaiya doesn't really know how to do the dog thing to well 😂 but Nix is so crazy. They both make my kids and I laugh non stop. I'm so glad my kids have the chance to experience a not-so-dog and a bit more of a dog 😂 Between them both… the snoring can be a bit much

  64. I adore my Boston Terrier

  65. My heart belongs to Boston Terriers !! I grew up with them, and my kids grew up with one I got my Boston when my kids were in preschool at age 2 & 3, he grew up with them, they are both in college and I just lost him 11/2017. He lived a very loved and spoiled 15 years. My sweet boy, best baby ever ♡♡♡ I miss him every day. I'll see you on the Rainbow Bridge, moma's sweet boy♡♡ ♡♡♡

  66. Both breeds are absolutely adorable. I had 2 Boston's, brother & sister from 8 weeks old. The male lived to be 14, and his sister 15. They were the funniest, friendliest, most human-like companions. They were both very very energetic, extremely intelligent, and wanted to be included in everything I was doing no matter what I was doing. Bostons are very loyal and make a great family dog AND they will keep you in stitches for hours on end with their antics! As the video pointed out, both of my Bostons had continuing eye problems which we had to treat with medication. By the time both had reached their last year of life, they were blind BUT STILL ran around the back yard as if they could see. They never lost their desire to play and be active. IMO, Boston Terriers are wonderful, loving dogs! I would not suggest a Boston Terrier for apartment living or for anyone with a low energy level. Bostons are extremely active, energetic dogs. Mine could literally run in the backyard chasing balls and a frisbee for 2 solid hours without ever slowing down or stopping to rest. We had a kiddie pool for them at all times to jump in and cool off as Bostons are prone to heatstroke because of their short snout. I MISS THEM TERRIBLY!! I would love to get a Frenchie next.

  67. They're both awesome…What kind of question is this?

  68. My bf has a Boston terrier and I have a frenchie + my ex bff (now freind) has a english bulldog

  69. Ummm neither! I have a Frenchton which is a combination of both breeds and that is the best of all worlds!

  70. Both are great dogs. I have a Frenchie and my daughter has a Boston. Frenchies are clowns and are more relaxed. Good descriptions.

  71. Boston terrier are the best mine died

  72. I have a Bosten terrier and I LOVE HIM

  73. Choosing one comes with the owner’s personality preference and budget. In my experience frenchies are cutter and make you laugh a lot with their clown gestures and moves, but at the same time, they are difficult to train because they think they are the kings of the world and can do anything they want. Meanwhile, the Boston is a great energetic extremely playful dog who perfectly exemplifies the phrase “dog who barks don’t bite”. He / she is a unconditional loyal companion who shows you gratitude (wanting to lick your face) when you play or walk with him / her. And BT are a better investment too; it cost $1,000s less and lives longer. Personally, I go all the way with my Boston Terrier.

  74. Best of both breeds = Frenchton! 🏆💗 Thanks for video! Please verify the breed heights stated as I believe you have these reversed. In my experience, the Boston Terrier is the taller of the two breeds.

  75. Love Em both! We had a beautiful Boston mix and Bailey was amazing and so loving and then someone stole her! Miss her everyday

  76. get both. frenchton

  77. frenchton is the best

  78. I've had both……..My Boston was DEFINITELY easier to train but my Frenchie was my 2nd child and BEST friend. I would definitely say they both are amazing but for some reason my frenchie and I had a WAY closer bond. I think it just depends. They both win!!!! ❤❤❤❤

  79. Bro I’m about to get one full blood for free from a sweet old lady☺️☺️

  80. i can't decide! i have a frenchton (french bulldog boston terrier mix) and i love him tons! his name is ozzie

  81. Had Bostons most of my 73 years. Wonderful companions

  82. The People Who loves Boston terrier just cant afford to a frenchie duhhh

  83. My aunts dog has died and it was a Boston terrier. 🙁 she is all alone now and Maddie was her only friend,, :C please make her feel better

  84. 둘다 넘구욤😍

  85. Boston terrier has my heart forever!!!

  86. If french bulldog didnt have health issue boston terriers would have been extinct.

  87. Boston’s for the win!!! We lost our Bronco at the age of 16 about 3 years ago. We just picked up our new Boston puppy last night. She’s 15weeks and we named her Franklyn. So far she’s been great asks to go out very good with her sister a Dachshound Beagle mix. Nothing wîll compare to our Bronco but so far she is pretty close. Slept under the covers last night just like Bronco used to.
